So after sell my trusted Canon XL1 to The Tea Party for Live video streaming after a shoot here in Las Vegas, i decided it was time to upgrade to HD. After weeks and weeks of searching for the right deal, I came across someone who had an original Canon XHA1 new in a sealed box, and I I just couldn't pass it up. I have to tell ya the quality of my XL1 was astounding, but in no comparison to this Canon, even though technology has been updated with the XHA1s, I've shot both and this is one smokin unit!. I'll post some stuff on Vimeo channel!

Picked up an awesome backup video camera the other day. A JVC GZ-HD7US, it shoots full 1920 HD has 3ccd and shoots to the built in 60gb hard drive or flash drive. This thing has all of the features of the larger pro camcorders without the bulk and the weight. This camera can be fully manual and you have control over aperture, white balance, shutter speeds, focus, zebras etc..... and the nice thing about it is all of the buttons on on the outside of the camera not embedded in the menu touchscreen like just about every other small camcorders in its class. For me I really like everything external and readily available to make adjustments on the fly. I really like the rear color viewfinder which you don't find on any small camcorders anymore whatsoever, its great for outside work when you can't see the screen due to sunlight. The built in mic is pretty good too, although I use an Azden shoe mount mic on top because it produces a bit crisper audio. The only downfall that I have found so far is there is no headphone output to monitor from.

I've seen some of the most powerful images taken, but this has got to be one of them. We all seem to forget the simple pleasures in life are only allowed to us by the few who make the greatest sacrifice of all. Next time you happen to see someone in uniform, take a moment and give thanks, whether its to shake a hand, say hello, or just smile, because who knows if you will get the chance again. It's been awhile

Well it's been awhile since I've done anything construction marketing related, since the housing crash a couple years ago. It appears that things are starting to scurry just a bit in the field anyhow, the phone rings a bit more from some old clients I haven't heard from in awhile. Here is a shot for a video/photo marketing shoot for the guys over at Creative Concrete Solutions. They are pouring a new tennis court in 7 Hills. Very cool process to witness.

Easy as Ice!

I have to give thanks to Kyle May at Flickr for the great tutorial regarding how to make fake ice. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kylemay/2045290249/ One of the struggles when shooting liquid products has always been the realism of the ice in the glass. I've used everything from stones to greatly filtered ice cubes but nothing gives the realism of ice like melted acrylic. Its really fairly simple and at a cost that is a fraction of buying acrylic ice from a store. I just wish I would have come across Kyles tutorial a bit sooner! This is one of the final shots from a photo shoot I finished up for Desert Diamond Distillery in Arizona.

Msecure Total Lockdown!

Another great application worth the mention is Msecure, available in the Itunes store. If you are like me you have hundreds of passwords, logins and registration codes that are just too numerous to remember. I have tried different forms of password management software, but none can compare to Msecure. It is fully customizable to fit each users needs. You can store just about any type of important information such as bank account numbers, software registration codes, website logins, server ssh information logins, you name it you can store it in here and all of the data is very well encrypted. You can have the application for your smart phone for free, and the interface to install on your laptop or desktop is only $14.95, which is priceless in my business. The sync ability in this app is awesome, you just log into your Mac, fire up the app, then open the app on your Iphone or other smart phone, click sync and voila your done. This app is great for users that have multiple machines as well, you just export the CSV file from one machine and import into another and that machine is sync'd up and your off and running. Another great feature of this storage vault app is the self destruction feature. You can set the number of login try's to 1, 5, 10, or 20, and if the password can't be entered correctly, the application self destructs, which may be useful for those who are bad at losing phones or having your laptop stolen, just make sure you don't forget your password. You don't need to have the app on your laptop or desktop, but it sure makes the data entry a bit easier. Go check it out on your phone, it's free, what do you have to lose! :-)

Speaking of Syncing Abilities...

When it comes to a world of syncing your machines and even mobile devices, there are a lot of options out there, but none can compare to the wonders of Dropbox. These guys really have it figured out. What a breeze to setup on all my Macs as well as my Iphone, and is even cross platform compatible for those of you that still use windows (ugh). This application gives you the file syncing ability across mac and pc and a basic account is free with 2gb of storage space. The interface couldn’t be easier to use, they give you a step by step instruction on how Dropbox works. One really cool thing about this app is the sharing ability, like for example, i needed to send some pictures to an editor, so I just dropped them in my public Dropbox folder copied the public url and sent it to editor, it’s really just that easy. Plus you can have multiple users that can access your box and you can setup access parameters to keep access to areas that you want them to use. I actually have two dropboxes on my Macs, it just takes a simple script and you in business, here is the link to how to accomplish this neat little gem.On top of it all, every time you refer someone, you get an extra 250mb of free space too! Well I can go on and on and try to sell you on this app, but just go check it out for yourself you’ll be glad you did oh and be sure to tell them that I sent ya!

Great Things in Small Packages

What else can I say other than wow! I own a lot of expensive camera gear, and I have tried these small economical carry around types before, but once I gave the Kodak Playsport a shot, I was truly amazed. This camera has a built in 5mp sensor for stills, (i wish this was a bit larger), but it takes great images. Now the video on the other hand is truly awesome. It shoots 720p, 720p 60frames, and full 1080p HD, and I have to say some of the video that I have shot on here looks better than my way more expensive video cameras. The audio is pretty awesome as well, very clear and definite. Wanna hear the best part? It's waterproof up to ten feet under water, so this is ideal to take to the water park, or just about anywhere without the worry of ruining it, and believe me I have tested this thing in swimming pools and in the lake numerous times and it still shoots like a champ. I also really like the size, it slips into just about any pocket with no protruding lenses or buttons to snag on. So if you are looking for a really solid all around camera and you don't want to lug around 25 pounds of gear in a sling bag, do yourself a favor and give the Playsport a shot and you will be glad you did!

Keeping your mail accounts in sync was always an issue with Windows, but since Windows is on its way out of the mainstream marketplace, I will share a tip for us Mac users on how to accomplish this. The issues that I have quite often, is I will send a mail from my laptop, therefore It is not accessible from my Imac, or I happen to make a new mail folder on one machine or the other, and before I know it voila, my accounts are completely different. You don’t need any special software to make your accounts “match” it’s pretty straight forward, but this may save you a little “Google time”. All you need to do is copy the following folders from the “base machine” to the one you want to bring up to date:

Copy ~Username/library/mail folder
Copy ~ Username/library/mail downloads folder
Copy ~ Username/library/preferences/com/apple.mail.plist

Paste the following copied files and folders to the same location on the machine you want to sync up and voila! Enjoy

Rails 3 is here!!!

Since the beginning days of Ruby on Rails brought to us by David Heinemeier Hansson, and all of the updates and upgrades since then, Rails 3 is finally here, out of beta and ready to rock and roll! This release is the hard work of over 1,600 developers, thousands of commits and nearly two years in the making, but it is was well worth the wait. There are tons of new features that will make your applications run better and give you a better overall coding experience. Rails has really come a long way from the beginning and the community is by far some of the best and helpful in the world of framework development. There are way too many changes for me to list but some of the high points that are a definite plus in this new version are:

ActiveRecord - a complete overhaul of ActiveRecord making it easier to work with and make ActiveRecord Queries.
ActionMailer - now ActionMailer depends on the Mail gem which was built from scratch making the library a solid foundation.
Gem Management - Rails 3 now uses Bundler to manage all of the applications dependencies, which can help when using multiple machines and multiple developers.
Scope Overhaul - Now you can use the same API in your models and have the ability to reuse scopes that you have written.
New Router for Action Controller - Syntax has been revamped to favor the REST style while giving you more flexibility.

While these are only a few of the many changes that are coming about in Rails 3, with all of the documentation, resources, and an astounding community on the internet, this has widely and quickly become one of the most stable flexible open source frameworks available to developers. All in all this release is actually a merge of Rails and Merb frameworks, that has been in the works for quite sometime. Lost in the Shuffle

Stock photography is an ever growing creative fast paced market that many photographers seem to get lost in the shuffle. One needs to be at their utmost creativity and skill level to stand out in the crowd of millions of images. Don't try to shoot whats been done, shoot whats been done and learn from these top selling images, then come to the realization of how to make it better, that will help your sales go up as well as your popularity will skyrocket. If a photographer can make images that move people, then those clients are more than likely to come back to your account time after time, and this is how you build a solid foundation for your client base. It seems these days with all camera manufacture's making pro level cameras available to the general public, everyone has a professional photographer in the family, just ask them. On the other hand, ask most of them and they couldn't tell you what F/Stops are much less how to use off camera flash lighting, and if you look closely, most of them are shooting in auto mode and never utilizing the camera to its fullest potential. I'm not saying you have to have a $7,000 camera body to shoot great images, but some people have this misconception that if they have such a device they "look like a pro", until you see the auto setting being used and watch them play "monkey see" with the lcd screen after every shot to see if it turned out. So if you are trying to get into stock imagery, or even some type of pro photography, do yourself a favor and know your craft, learn your camera, and all of its functionality to its fullest potential and you will save yourself a lot of shutter wear and embarrassing moments when your images are rejected upon stock submission. One more note, please turn off the focus beep sound function, because nothing screams n00b like the inability to focus a shot and letting everyone around you know it. :)

It seems some of the best food is not always in the limelight of the Las Vegas Strip, large chain restaurants, or any major hotel for that matter. Its the little places that always seem to amaze me and satisfy my cravings. I have to give 2 thumbs up to a little place on South Boulder Highway called El Torito Cafe. I have eaten at just about every Mexican restaurant in the valley and have yet to come across anyplace that can compare to the authenticity and quality of the meal along with great service and hospitality. Don’t be fooled by the exterior appearance, this place has been around for 20+ years and trying to get a table at dinnertime can sometimes be quite a challenge. You drive by in the day time and it looks abandoned, but when dinner rolls around, people are parked out in the dirt lot next door and the place is packed to the hilt. They have everything on the menu imaginable, but I must say that the carnitas platter is by far my favorite. “Number 18 Mr. Finn?” they ask every time I go there, and I am never disappointed. Not many places can you frequent where not only do they know your name but what you have when you get there, now that’s what I call a great ‘joint’. So if you are indecisive about what or where you are going to eat and would like to try someplace new, it’s o.k. to step outside the norm and if you find yourself in the neighborhood, stop on by and give El Torito Cafe a shot, and I guarantee you ‘ll be back time and time again. Tell ‘em Larry sent ya!

Believe! Livestrong!

With a guy like 7 time Tour De France champion Lance Armstrong on your side, how could one not jump on board with the Livestrong concept. Their website has a miraculous amount of ways to make a better life for yourself, and live longer and healthier at your own pace using the tools you feel comfortable with and its all completely free. They have dares that one can challenge themselves to from stop smoking to eating more vegetables, to cleaning the clutter off of your desk to get a more breathable work space. I am an especially big fan of the tools section, I can use the loop tool where I can map out my route that I run or bike and in turn I get a complete calorie count as to my workout. They even have a BMI calculator to determine whether you are underweight overweight or right where you need to be. You can even use the body fat calculator to determine this feedback as well. One of the hardest aspects of being fit and staying within this type of lifestyle is one may feel abandoned or alone, but Livestrong has you covered there as well, you can join existing member groups and discuss and network, or you can even start up your own group if you happen to not find one that suits your needs. There is tons of news articles, video how t0s and even videos about how people cope and live with certain conditions. Livestrong is a way of life that more people should get involved in to not only be aware of the dangers of our fast paced lifestyles, make changes for themselves, but also to help others that are in need of support and positive feedback if they are dealing with an ailment like cancer. Javascript is not the Devil!

Many still have the misconception that browsing the web with JavaScript on is somehow the same thing as driving around with your personal information pasted on the side of your car ready for all hackers to take. What is this 1995?….and um no its not that way at all……It is true that hackers can steal information about you without you knowing it but I highly doubt that JavaScript is the culprit. If you spend all of your time white listing your internet browsing sites by turning on or turning off depending on your trust factor, you are probably missing out on alot that some sites have to offer. Here is some evidence that may change your mind…..I have personally browsed thousands and thousands of sites and never turned my JavaScript setting off, and I’m still up and running and have not had any identity issues either.

I browse with JavaScript turned on because for one i use JavaScript in a lot of our designs and applications because it does very cool stuff on the user interface level. As a Web Developer, I wish the whole concept of “turning JavaScript off” would just vanish, because I really don’t want to design boringly degraded websites when JS opens up a whole world of possibilities that make the web what it is

A site that works well with JavaScript usually is designed very well and has a great design architecture. I’m not saying to rely on JS only when designing, that would be just lazy, but I fell that using it in certain aspects give the user the niceties and creates a web experience like no other. So leave JavaScript turned on, stay out of the Darker Side of the web and see what you have been missing out on.

Musings from Burntwell

We decided to take a trip out of the ordinary last year. Instead of the repetition of the crowded amusement parks, commercialized zoos, or fighting the multitude of inexperienced boaters and jet skiers at the local recreational lakes, we decided to go to a out of the way dude ranch. We searched around the web to see what options were available, and found a lot of them to be commercialized and non personable, which is not the experience we were longing for. Growing up in New Mexico and knowing there are thousands of miles of open ranges and many large cattle ranches we happened upon the Burntwell Guest Ranch outside the town of Ruidoso. We were intrigued by this ranch after realizing they only book two families at a time so we knew it would be a very personalized style and a one on one type of vacation. After driving 14 hours to reach the ranch, (the anticipation was starting to wear on our girls), we drove down the last 25 miles of dirt road which lead us to the main guest house at the ranch. We were totally amazed at the hospitality and the quality of the amenities after being greeted by the owners Kim and Patricia Chesser and being shown around their humble abode. Apparently this ranch used to be a flourishing cattle and sheep ranch with over twelve hundred head, but with the drought in the west and the coyotes and mountain lion population on the rise, after being re introduced into the State, the owners decided it was time to make a change in their way of life and earning a living on the ranch. What made this vacation so special was the fact that there are no TV's, internet connections, telephones, and no outside disturbances to distract you from enjoying the ranch life and all that it had to offer. We found it sort of amusing that without all of the technological toys that our girls are used to, they stayed completely busy just roping, playing horseshoes, taking care of the horses, and learning from Patricia and Kim, what living in the country is all about. We really hit it off with the other family as well, and have made a new set of friends that we keep in touch with. All in all if you really want a different sort of vacation away from the brown noise of city life, lines, smog and commercialized playgrounds, book a stay with your family at the Burtwell Ranch and step back in time, and see for yourself what you have been missing out on and give your family a vacation that they will remember for a lifetime! PS....I never realized how tough it was to ride a horse, blog about the journey and be the photographer too......ha ha........

Legacy Lost

I do a lot of road traveling and I have noticed a trend along the highways of America, of closing and abandoned restaurants that were once flourishing tourist establishments for travelers and families alike. I can recall even as a child when we went on road trips as a family we would all look forward to the great food and experiences from the new "adventure food stop". It seems that today families don't even talk in the car much less stop and enjoy any family time at one of these iconic roadside restaurants. I have a good friend who when traveling, wears headphones, listening to an mp3 player, his wife listens to hers, and the children both have on head sets watching a Dvd movie, and they hit every fast food restaurant without ever missing a beat. Needless to say this is not the way we travel, we talk and take in all that the interesting happenings the drive has to offer. Most people don't realize how short life is, and that the small amount of time they spend together is numbered. Soon families such as my friends, will be aimlessly wondering where the time went, and why the memories are so few, far and faded. Technology is a good thing in certain terms, but with mp3 players, laptops, in car dvd players, and video games, one may ask the question “Who needs conversation anyhow?” I guess in short, my family and I have not fallen prey to the drive up and drive on mentality that the information age and fast food restaurants have instilled upon us. We still take time out to sit down to find out what goes on in each others lives by taking the time and making these timeless stops at roadside restaurants in our travels. Soon families and travelers will no longer be able to learn about each other or see the cultures and art that adorn the walls on these types of establishments due to many are closing down.

No matter what corner of the valley you are in you are always just a few steps away from truly tantalizing your taste buds with just about any cuisine you can dream of.

The “buzz” of the year is social media, and unless you’ve been hiding in a cave you know exactly what I’m talking about. Just say no to Bunning

With the uncertainty of the future of America, the last thing families need is the cantankerous attitude of 78 year old hall of fame pitcher and “should be retired” Senator Jim Bunning. It burns me and probably most of Americans that we can dump billions into foreign economies and billions into bailing out the “Banking System” which got us into this in the first place, but we can’t approve an extension of benefits for struggling families. This halting move by Mr Personality had forced 2,000 federal employees into unpaid situations, and instilled jeopardy for jobless benefits for millions not to mention halted more than 40 highway projects, but guaranteed Mr Bunning got his check on time. Since the Senator is retiring after this session, no one can control his ornery attitude and close minded thought processes…….Well hes almost gone, and maybe there is a few others that should take a permanent vacation from politics as well, then maybe we can get this country back on track eventually…….just my .02c!

CUBE2MEDIA

Well after a long stretch of the why's and why nots, I have teamed up with Bob Hanson from Electric Graffitti Multimedia in Salt Lake City Utah and we have finally started up Cube2 Media. This has been a long time coming, but we wanted to wait until just the right time, and now that time has hit us like a snowplow. We mainly build online web applications, but we do dynamic web site design as well. Most everything we build is done in rails framework, but not to forget JQuery, Javascript, and even SEO optimization. We have already launched a couple of client projects, the first is a stand alone all inclusive resort booking framework called ParadiseResortsNow, go check it out, they have some great deals if you are interested in vacationing in Mexico or the Dominican Republic. I could not believe the amenities these resorts had to offer until really getting a feel for them while building the site. The next project that is finishing up is called MoonwalkCardio This project entailed all of the dynamic design aspects, as well as all of the photography and video work as well. I think this client is onto something very ingenious within the heath communitiy as well as the medical community. Well until next time...click it!!

AN ALL IN ONE MODERN MARVEL

They are getting thinner, faster, cheaper, and as an end result they are becoming the normal for people all over the globe. For the past few years there were the haves with disposable income, and have-nots on the border of carrying around a brick phone due to price restraints on smart phones. Technological analysts predict there will be over a billion smart phones in global circulation by 2011, and approximately 38% of all phones will be this type by 2012.[Source: LinuxDevices.com]. Apple reportedly has pre-sold 600,000 Iphone units in one day, and if that is any sign of what is to come these numbers will be far too low. Smart phones have made a real impact in the corporate business world, where execs transmit highly confidential information because they now can. One of the most important items on the design table is security issues, because this openness and configurability, comes with a downside which is vulnerability to viruses, and with users keeping there whole world all in one place, there are viruses which can actually lock the phone and erase all interior information. As it stands more security is enhanced for the operating system and behaviors rather than network security, and with all new blistering wifi speeds, there is just about no limit to what smart phones can do, and no limit to what hackers will come up with, but this is all changing with the open source developer involvement exploding into application development and security development that are being designed for these new devices. Mobile Smart Phone Technology is the fastest changing area due to no one company having a lock on designs or applications being designed for them, so what will the next phone look like? a small tablet? a new style of flip? one worn on the wrist? who knows, I guess we will all have to stay tuned to see and hope we will be able to upgrade the moment they are released!!

Well apple never ceases to amaze me with the options available on the new line up of machines. This time was no different. I initially purchased the new 15" macbook pro which i thought was a smokin' machine. I have been using apple for about the past 4 years. I initially switched due to the instability in windows operating systems, sub standard browsers, and virus after virus. So in the realm of it all i went mac and purchased the original white intel macbook to give them a shot and wow i was floored at the stability, browser adherence and was so impressed i purchased a 20" imac for the office as well. Like I say I was so impressed with the new 15" laptop that I bought, I was curios what I was missing out on by not owning the 17" model...answer .......quite a bit...1920 screen resolution, dedicated 9600/512 switchable dedicated video card, and so much more.......Everyone always harps.."Mac's are so expensive".....well in my line of work you only get what you pay for......but the fact of the stability of the operating system, and the sheer speed and compatibility with web development software are built right in and standard.. Now with the release of Snow Leopard, they have really outdone themselves with this one.....it is not a complete re design of Leopard, but they have really enhanced on an excellent operating system that was in place. They listened to customers and developers about what they felt would help make the mac better and they have come up with the solution...Snow Leopard....So if you happen to walk by or stop by and see me standing in 17" of snow take a closer look and really see what you have been missing out on by staring at your windows..... A Good friend and longtime web developer name Bob Hanson owner of Electric Graffitti, was the one who initially got me into web design way back when...I was amazed at the html and css languages and how they manipulated the pages that the end user sees on the internet. He always is a great honest critic of the sites that I build, but all along kept assuring me that the "Static Road" is all but becoming a thing of the past. All along Bob has been telling me that the new and exciting ride is on the Rails.....I thought to myself what is he talking about, dashboard web design is king!..and a king I was becoming........ Well after 2 grueling weeks so far of opening up Ruby on Rails books and diving into the divine world of Dynamic Application Web Design, I am truly amazed at what I have been missing out on, and the level of achievement that Bob has under his belt. It is a whole new world of scriptlets, models, controllers, but it all makes sense on the simplistic structure of how it comes together to build the application. To build a website in a non dashboard environment is a new one to me as well. Instead of just clicking a button and letting the software populate the codes and commands, you have to hand code everything! So in the new world of Terminals, MYSQL Databases, and Rake Commands, I guess I get lucky by having someone like Bob on my team....Thx Bob-O!

THE WONDERS OF THE DEEP

One place that is worth the visit while in Vegas is the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay. They have everything from Komodo Dragons, Alligators, Sharks and tons of Marine Life I have never even seen before. The girls really got a kick out of the shark tunnels where all of the marine life goes over the top of you as you walk through a circular tunnel. They have a tank full of jelly fish, one full of star fish and even an open top tank with stingray's that you can reach in and touch..... One of the coolest fish were the piranha's...they seem so serene just quietly swimming around all innocent and such. Pictures are a little challenging to get due to the 6" thick glass, but if you get creative you can get some decent shots. I did find out that you can pay to dive the shipwreck for 2 hours for $650.00. Kinda pricey, but when would you ever get the chance to dive with sharks in a controlled situation. The only requirement is that your are a licensed diver, I think I will do this and take my gopro camera with me and get some really good footage....

The Hidden Wonders of Central California Coast......

Morro Bay California.....I have been to California many times and never bothered to indulge in the Central Coast.. I have been from Sandiego to North of Bodega Bay but a good friend has opened my eyes to the wonders that lie just East of Bakersfield..

He and his wife showed us the Central Coast in the coolest fashion, since they both grew up there, it was like having a personal tour guide so nothing went unseen. My wife and girls had the best time seeing all of it. We started at Pismo Beach and went all the way north to Seal Beach and Randy left no stone unturned with seeing all the cool stuff in between such as Cayucos Beach and pier, the quaint town of Cambria, Nitwitt Ridge, The Hearst Castle, and even the Piedra Blancas Lighthouse. We initially came in through the South up Through Pismo but took a different route home going through Paso Robles and eventually making our way to Cholame and getting to see something I have always wanted to see, the James Dean Memorial and Crash Site......Very cool for those of you who have not seen it...there is even an artist dedication of James at the Texaco Station at Highway 33 cutoff.....

These are just a few of the images i took along our "guided tour" of the area, I think i snapped about 500 or so shots.....whew, I took my D80 in lieu of my D300, and I really haven't shot alot with the 80 but I was suprised how easy it was to use and the quality of the images as well, "good call Joe", I'm glad i picked it up!!

Finally found a great deal on a new Sony HD prosumer camcorder. It is a nice addition to the equipment list. All be the HVR HD 1000 an entry level pro camcorder, it shoots amazing video, has tons of features and more connections than anyone could possibly need, and a price tag that was amazingly more affordable than most small consumer hd camcorders. It features a wide screen touch screen for the menu system which makes certain adjustments a bit time consuming, but I have added an external view monitor which is definitely an excellent addition with viewing now being about 7 inches instead of 2.5. The shotgun mic has great sound pick up and with the add on Beachtek, remote mics are always a possibility if needed. This will be a great addition for the wedding & event portion of the business as well as commercial ad capabilities as well...

Two Days In New Mexico

Just got back from a quick trip to New Mexico over the holiday weekend. We actually drove to a small town called Truth or Consequences. This town sits halfway between Albuquerque and Las Cruces along I-25. This area is best known for its natural hot springs and the fact that they changed the name of the town from Hot Springs to Truth or Consequences in the '50s after the popular Ralph Edwards radios show of the same name. This area is also host to the largest lake in the state Elephant Butte and also adorns the curves of the mighty Rio Grande River which spirals its way through town.....The video above is just a few clips of our drivings around the wide open areas and small town atmosphere that the area has to offer, and I will be uploading some pictures of the trip as well, I wish I would have taken my Sony HD cam now, because the colors on the Canon are kind of bland.....but oh well......

Well with all that has been goin on lately, I decided to take advantage of the nice weather this weekend and go to the lake with my wife and my daughters. We started off riding our bikes around inside the park along the new biking trail and ended having lunch down at lake mead marina. There were quite a few people up at the two marinas for a sunday in off season, but we decided to look around. It has been quite a while since my daughters have been there, since we recently sold our jet boat and jet skiis, to see the massive amounts of bass and carp lurking around in the icy dark depths below the marinas, and the love of popcorn these fish have. They have only seen them from above but thanks to my new gopro camera, they got to see a different perspective, and I wanted to put the "waterproof" to the test anyhow, and see if it held true, which it did and we got some really neat footage to share. I guess it is every photographers goal to have a model that is so photogenic that it appears that no matter what you do in the shot set up it just all seems to be the right choice.... Having the opportunity to shoot Christina prior to the engagement shoot was such a pleasure....We tried a multitude of shot scenes but we did it all in one location.....We used multiple SB800's with umbrellas to soften the light and bounce cards for fill lighting..again we had the task of harsh afternoon sun, but Nikon pulled through for me again....Click on the image to view the set of shots...enjoy.....until next time......Oh and remember comments are welcome....

THE CROWE ENGAGEMENT

Well the long awaited photo shoot for the John Crowe and Christina Stevens finally took place over the past weekend. We decided to do an outdoor shoot at a few different locations. The only drawback was it was harsh sun afternoon........but I brought my trusty SB800's along for the task and I belive we were able to get the shots the clients were after.....we tried a few different setups with straight stobes to using blow through umbrellas, and even bounce discs......Well anyway congratulations to the new to be couple and I will be uploading pictures from the wedding and reception as well.........CLick on the picture to view the set.....until next time.....

My daughters thought it would be fun to shoot a quick video using that helmet cam I picked up at the SEMA show..and a little music courtesy of Nickelback (Dark Horse album set to be out on November 18th!!).......I tried it out mounting it on the tops of the RC cars but also have a little video input from a couple of other cameras views as well!!! In the first truck scene it actually flips over onto the camera, but the GOPRO is in a really tough enclosure... the last scene ends up with a crash as well... Enjoy.....

Well another year has come around and this years SEMA show is one of the best ever. There are so many new items for the automotive industry, it takes up the whole convention center inside and out. There is even a whole convention hall dedicated to just tires and wheels, and it would take you all day just to see them!!!....This is actually my first SEMA show that I was able to attend thanks to Randy....(thanks RD)..I had no idea that this convention was this massive, and even with the country on the verge of a massive recession, you really could not tell by the amount of Vendors and Buyers at the show. The "Big Three" auto makers had very large and very cool displays of the "Now" and "What's To Come Conceptuals", but personally I think the 2010 Camaro will be the biggest hit to the "Retro" automotive sector yet. I'm not saying that the new Challenger or Mustang are not able to hold their own, but I've always been know to have worn a bowtie............... I did spend all day in the Accessories and Perfomance halls, and did not even see all of that section, so if you don't have a 3 or 4 day pass, figure out what you would like to see, because jogging is not an option..... Almost all of the pictures in this set are from the A & P section of the show. And Yes, for those that are curious, I did actually make a purchase (business related of course), while I was there, of a very cool action and underwater camera to add to the photography case. It is from a company called Go Pro Cameras, if you have not heard of them then go check em out!! There cameras are very high quality right out of the box, and requires no post editing other than a little stitching if you have mulitiple movies, and the best, I mean the "BEST" thing is they are MAC compatible right out of the box, Yeah!!!!......and yes I will be uploading some of the cool videos and features here soon.........Until next time!!!!!

Well the "fright" season is upon us and another Boulder City Swim Team Carnival has come and gone thanks to Carol for setting it all up and for all of the parents and participants that helped. Even with the ever dwindling economy, there appeared to be an excellent turnout overall. There were a few added items this year, such as the popcorn machine and the "stuff a bear" attraction which seemed to be the hot item of the night, but let us not forget the haunted house attraction, which seemed to be the cause of a few terrified faces coming out of the exit door. As far as costumes go, iI would have to say the little Dorothy Costume complete with the red shoes stole everyones vote.........until next year then....have a scary night tonight!

SMALL TOWN FRIDAY NIGHT..

Small towns have always been know for their dedication to football....with such movies like Varsity Blues & Friday Night Lights, they have really shown the true meaning of what it means to be a part of a small town community and support the local team...You could pretty much drive down main street in any small town in America on a Friday night and see absolutely no one and virtually no business' open. Boulder City Nevada is just such a town, this place reminds me of the small town in New Mexico I grew up in called Lovington, where everyone who wasn't playing, coaching, or watching the game was helping in some sort of fashion from cooking food, shooting videos of the game, taking pictures for the paper, keeping score or announcing the game over the local radio station, and they all do if for free......Most large cities and metro areas don't have the "small town spirit" that you will find in places like boulder city, with their metal detectors and police force patrols, most people would rather not even take the chance on going to the games anymore. Living in a small town has its advantages, but most people will never know what they are because they have never experienced what it is like to be "part of a team", and I think that is exactly what it is when you live in a small town and support the community, is being part of the team!

A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A QUARTER SCALE!!!!

Well another season is almost over for the quarter scale race cars, trucks, buggies, & off road stadium trucks....at the Boulder City Speedway...If you have never been to one these races it is definitely a must see...you would almost swear you were at a real race, I mean these cars fly around the asphalt like Mark Martin on a Sunday. The track is complete with banked turns and lit night races that are extremely awesome to watch with the added excitement of crashes, burn-outs and just about every exciting aspect which makes real Nascar what it is.. This was my first chance at seeing the off road series trucks at the track, we got there late but managed to get off a few shots in the last heat..the off road series trucks are going to be running another race on November 22nd, but the track will be completely reconfigured for the national event....So if you are looking for something to do that is out of the ordinary, come out and see this exciting event, and bring your appetite because you will not want to miss out on one of the "world famous" concession burgers with all the fixins..........Click Here if you are interested and need directions....

Boulder City may be a small town, but for the findings of pristine antique aircraft they can't be reckoned with. There were so many types of airplanes on display at the BC Airshow over the weekend it was hard to pick a favorite. They had everything from pre WWII to the most advanced experimental air craft. It appears the main goal of the show was to find a renewed interest in aviation which has fallen of drastically over the past decade, and with fuel prices what they are, it makes it tougher for the individual pilots to fly as much as they use to. It was great to see so many people that are still interested in aviation which resulted in a really good turnout overall. There were companies that were offering free rides, motorized glider rides, helicopter rides as well as tandem parachute jumps....(not for the faint of heart)..There was an original Russian Experimental Mig as well as Military Medic helicopters and some very cool bi-plane and acrobatic planes as well....as far as photography goes, the sky could not have been more cooperative with the explosive colors and clouds which gave birth to some dramatic color effects overall.......if you missed this air show, you should set your calendar to be sure and catch the next one.......great food, small crowd, and plenty to do and see......

I decided to take a different approach to the car show this year. Instead of trying to fight the crowds and have tons of pictures with people in the foreground and background, i thought i would show a different side by shooting the emblems and the angles that everyone really loves about these cars in the first place. It still amazes me how these cars were initially designed and constructed with so many lines and stylish features and all being made out of steel. Don't get me wrong I do know how to appreciate a nice murcielago or new Aston Martin, but the older cars still by far have more style and originality by far.

ZION UTAH............................

Finally had the time to take the family to Zion Utah over the labor day weekend. I can't believe I have lived here as long as I have and never been to this place...It is by far a photographers' dream. The weather was pretty overcast and rainy most of the trip, so we waited out the fog and the rain and went into the park around noon, which worked out perfect because when we got ready to leave, the sun showed up towards the evening and really brought out the "colors of Zion" that I had been hearing so much about. We ended up not tent camping because it was a last minute planning, so we stayed at Zion Ponderosa. This place is amazing in its own right. Theoretically you would never have to leave the ranch. They have everything from atv rentals, rock climbing, zip lines, archery, tours,..........and the list goes on and on......they will even setup a shuttle to take you into Zion so you don't even have to drive. For any of you that have not made the short 3 hr +/- trip I suggest that you do, you could spend a full week in the park and never see it all and trust me pictures don't do it justice!!!!!!! The Descending Bear of Weeping Rock.....

If you look really close you can see the bear descending downward onto the base of weeping rock....Some people see an old man.........I see both but I will leave an age old debate alone and let you decide what it is......

The Girls on Slick Rock...........

Well my youngest is the fearless of the bunch as you can barely see her up on the highest edge of slick rock. She would have gone all the way up if it wasn't for time constraints......but then when you are 8 what does that mean anyhow.......

Dead Mans Curve......

Dually named for its jagged rocks along the curved road. If braking does not occur in time, there is not much room for recovery. I shot this with gradient sepia and warming filters. I found it fitting to the shot.

Into The Abyss.......

With the weather snapping at us all weekend, i found this name to be fitting. It seemed no matter where we went or what corner we turned down, this was the sky scene that played a big part of our excursion.

The Wonderful World Of Lagoon!

Lagoon has been an excellent family getaway amusement park in Northern Utah since July of 1886. It was originally about 2.5 miles west of its current location, but was relocated in 1893 due to receding levels at the Great Salt Lake. The park initially offered, dancing, swimming, roller skating, bowling and other such attractions. The first thrill ride was the "Shoot the Chutes" which was in operation by 1906. Read Full Story Here Lagoon retains its individualism with constantly changing attractions as well as keeping the favorites of the locals and return visitors alike. Lagoon is the type of place that still retains the quality of family values by boasting such attractions as kiddie land, "old school" amusement rides, and cutting edge thrill rides for the daredevil in us all. We have been coming here for the over the past 10 years with our children, and my wife frequented Lagoon throughout her childhood as well. If you get the chance take the drive which is only about 17 miles north of Salt Lake City and see what you have been missing out on! I just love fun portrait shoots. The Hanson Family ~ Bob, Michelle, Tyler, and Zach were just such a shoot. They are the kind of family that make shooting pictures worthwhile, and make me really enjoy what I do. The whole family aside from being very photogenic, sure makes creating the images a whole lot easier with lots of laughter and "natural" posings. We did the shoot in just under an hour using only natural morning lighting. Normally I would be all over using artificial lighting with strobes and umbrellas, but I was really liking the final outcome of the images without using them. With very little post processing we were able to satisfy the look they were out to achieve. Click Michelles' picture to view a few images from the shoot!

THE SALT LAKE CITY TEMPLE

The Salt Lake City Temple has got to be one of the most amazing architectural designs that I have come across. This project was started in 1853 and forty years to the date April 6th, it was completed in 1893. Its amazing to me how structures of this magnitude were built. One stone at a time. It is mind boggling when you see the construction cranes, boom lifts, and the equipment it takes to build the casinos and high rises across the Vegas skyline, but knowing projects like the Temple were built by hand with no help from expensive mechanical equipment. Structures like this took years of planning, and well thought out designs with craftsmanship which could never be matched today in a world of styrofoam, stucco, and fake facade's.

I found this old camera buried under a heap of boxes and stuff when I was going through and cleaning out some stuff...I remember when these came out....."Oooh the leather case......Oooh the flip up compact design, and wow look at that zoom....but it arises the question of where do I plug in the USB cable?

and now we have moved on to these....unlimited storage capacity, multiple file type storage, remote control strobe technology, HD ready, and still, this is yesterdays camera, ......I wonder what tomorrow will bring...say the year 2025?

Finally found a really cool storage backup for the laptop. I've never been able to find a drive small enough in size but large enough in storage capacity until I came across the Seagate Free Agent....this drive is smokin fast and ultra small......up to 250 GB which is plenty to store just about everything I use without having to keep my laptop hard drive filled up...The great thing about this drive other than size is that I found it for under $100 at Office Max....Read More About It Here...oh and what comes after a terabyte......???

Just purchased the new JVC Everio Gz MG330....this thing is amazing and so handy when I don't want to lug around any of my larger video cameras, It has a 30 gig hard drive built in as well as mini SD card option....I've owned a lot of various hand held video cameras, but not hold a candle in size, quality of video and features as this little one does. It comes with Windows software only, but me being an Apple guy, i downloaded MPEG Streamclip by Square 5 a free download, and a separate codec for playback from Apple for about $20. How fast and amazingly simple videos are to download, edit, upload and burn out on dvd if you choose.....For around $400.00 i think it is onle of the best camcorders for the money with all of the options and features you get!

Getting used to seeing this type of image all along the major interstates, highways and byways......Once considered the "stopping places for families to take a break from the long road trip, sit down over a meal and share in some great family conversation. But all of this has been replaced with fast food restaurants and quickee marts for the drive up and drive on mentality. Kind of a shame really, i know as a kid we used to stop and take a break, but with ipods, in car dvd movies, and laptops, it seems there really isn't much reason to stop anymore....Oh well ...... and would you like to supersize your fries with that!

Well I thought since the weather was so nice I might as well get out and try out my new Sigma APO 70-200 F/2.8, and wow it sure does capture the colors and the crispness....All of these pictures were taken in Boulder City on Sunday. My daughter just really enjoys going along and helping, and funny enough she will actually stop me and say "hey dad, you should take a picture of this from this angle"........

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of shooting Christina and John. Christina is always a pleasure to photograph and always makes the work fun. CREATIVE LIGHTING SYSTEM

This New Nikon Creative Lighting System is amazing, especially with the combination of using the new D300 in conjunction. I must say that Nikon sure has made immense improvements since the D200.....I also picked up the MBD10 Battery Grip to up the shots to 8FPS.....pretty quick. The Live View on the rear is probably one of the coolest upgrades in the 300, but I guess it doesn't hurt to mention the 3200/6400 iso either......

I think that New Mexico is one place that every photographer should visit....Tons of history (well preserved), and some of the nicest people around....the nice thing about NM is there isn't ton's of people to deal with and you can really enjoy the places at your own pace, from Billy the Kid Towns, Carlsbad Caverns, Gila Cliff Dwellings, Santa Fe, Taos....I could go on and on. I plan on making another trip in March of this year, and will update some new images when I return.....Hoping to shoot Bosque Del Apache....

This abandoned Catholic church actually sits on a hill just up from our property in Las Palomas. The church dates back to the early 1800's and was turned into a school sometime in the late 1800's. There is a massive grave yard dating back to the churches beginning, and they are still burying family members next to their ancestors today.

LAKE VALLEY

LAKE VALLEY NEW MEXICO

Lake Valley began as little more than a stage stop in the 1870s, at a location north of its present site. It was named for nearby dry lake beds. When that location was flooded, the settlement moved about a mile to the southwest. In August, 1878, George W. Lufkin and Chris Watson discovered silver ore around the area. Their discovery started a silver mining rush as prospectors settled in the area to continue the mining.In 1884, the railroad was extended to Lake Valley. Lake Valley became a typical mining town, with saloons open around the clock. The town had a reputation for lawlessness. A gunfighter named Jim Courtright, aka “Longhair Jim,” was hired as town marshall in 1882, and quickly brought things to order. During the 1920s, and again during the World War II era and into the 1950s, the area around Lake Valley was mined for manganese ore. The little adobe chapel was used for church services as recently at the 1970s, and the Schoolhouse is still in use for community events.
